No one ever expects to experience a dental emergency, but a toothache or lost filling can interrupt your day with no warning. 1 in 6 Americans needs an emergency dentist every year. If the unexpected should happen, it’s normal to have concerns about what you can expect on the road ahead. Although every situation is unique, here are 5 common dental emergency procedures.
1. Root Canal Therapy
Contrary to popular misconceptions, an occasional toothache isn’t normal. Instead, it’s often a symptom of an infection deep within a tooth. Many people try to wait out the pain, but the discomfort won’t stop until the infected pulp is removed via root canal therapy. Despite its bad reputation, root canals aren’t painful. Your dentist will use a local numbing agent to keep you comfortable while removing the inflamed tissue. Your tooth will be sterilized and sealed to prevent new infections. Your dentist may recommend placing a crown on your tooth for added protection.
2. Cosmetic Dental Bonding
Although your teeth are strong, they aren’t indestructible. Chips or fractures can happen. Your tooth will be at risk of infections and additional damage if it isn’t treated. Cosmetic dental bonding is a simple procedure repairing a broken tooth. A resin material is shaded to match the color of your enamel to blend in with your tooth to create natural-looking results.
3. Dental Crowns
A crown is a customized cap that’s bonded over the entire surface of a tooth above the gum line. It’s often needed to fix a significant break, fracture, or large area of decay. It can also be used along with other treatments, like a root canal. A crown is made of all-ceramic material to look like a real tooth.
4. Tooth Extractions
Your dentist will always try to save every tooth; however, there are situations when extraction is best, like severe infections or fractures. If your tooth must be removed, your dentist will also review your replacement options, like a dental implant or bridge.
5. Restoration Replacement
Over time, it’s not uncommon for a filling or crown to come loose or fall off completely. Your dentist will replace the restoration to prevent any new damage to your tooth.
Don’t Wait to Call Your Dentist
No one has the time or money for an unexpected dental appointment; however, don’t wait to see your dentist. As with any emergency, time is of the utmost importance. If you wait too long to get the care you need, your dentist may not be able to save your tooth. They’ll get you into the office quickly to restore your smile without it costing you an arm or a leg.
